Lost Videotape Brings Fraud Conviction

According to Insurance Journal some not-to-bright folk videotaped themselves crashing a van into a tree. They then turned a claim in to the insurance company. Problem is, after they collected the insurance check, they misplaced the tape.
Now the story gets good. An ex-husband of one of the perpetrators was reviewing some tapes he received as part of a divorce settlement. What he saw was the perfect revenge. The ex-husband turned the air-tight case over to the police.
People video tape family events like birthdays and weddings. Why would anyone tape themselves committing a crime? Who knows, but their stupidity is society’s gain.
The perpetrators could have faced felony charges and spent up to five years in prison, but made a deal and repaid the $4,300 to the insurance company and pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges. The have to serve 40 hours of community service, 24 months probation, and pay fines of $750.
